- The Century racks are based on the new OPTIMA Business Modem technology. This
- is the new platform with flashroms and everything but the kitchen sink in
- terms of features (caller id, dial back security, remote configuration,
- distinctive ring detection, etc). The OPTIMA 288R line cards which go into
- the Century rack have the exact same featureset as the OPTIMA Business Modem
- with the exception of leaving off the voice support (why would you want voice
- in a rack?).

- Here's the deal. If you're looking for a rack that you can hang off your
- LAN with network management and a ton of high end features like that, the
- Century isn't going to do the job for you...at least not right now. If the
- customers request those type features in that product, we may add it, or make
- it an option. However, for now, I would refer those folks to our Millenium
- network system, which is our high-end rack solution and it does have network
- management, etc, but of course consequently costs quite a bit more than
- Century.
-
- Century was created based purely upon customer requests. We've had the
- Millenium for years and years, but we constantly have had customers come up to
- us at trade shows and such and say "that's overkill". They were looking for
- something where they could cheaply support alot of modems without having a
- stack of standalones with wires going everywhere.
-
- The Century does this quite nicely. The Century 16 will give you 16 modems
- and mount nicely in a 19" cabinet for the same price per port as 16
- stand-alones (and this includes chassis, power supply and everything). You do
- not get network management, however the Century 16 does have an LCD control
- panel on the front of it that will let you monitor or reset any individual
- modem in the rack. The control panel will even give let you use it's speaker
- to listen to one of the line cards. Although it does not have alot of high
- end features, the cards are indeed hot-swappable, they also have a switch on
- the front of each card to busy them out or do a loopback test, etc.
-
- All of the details are of course on the web site (see SIG file for addresses).
